Persons of Faith Take Note

April 16th, 2008 71 comments

First of all, thanks to SecondAlamo for the original comment about Californians for Population Stabilization (CAPS).

The youtube video comes from CAPS which is a subsidiary or off-spin of Federation for American Immigration Reform(FAIR).  Again, FAIR’s founder and still current board member is John Tanton.  Tanton’s primary driving factor in this debate appears to be controlling population growth.  Tanton also founded Zero Population Growth and is interested along with FAIR’s CEO of having net negative population growth.  In fact, recently FAIR CEO Dan Stein confirmed his assertions that a good population for the United States would be 150 million.  Folks, that means half of us would have to disappear.  So, for all those who think it’s just about ‘illegals’ - think again.

Persons of Faith should take note, in my estimation, after the ‘illegals’ and the legals, we(persons of faith) are the next segment who would be perceived to be ‘over-populating’.  This no longer seems to be a far-fetched notion so persons of faith take note.

CNN: Illegal immigrants pay billions in taxes

This CNN article, has lots of interesting tidbits including:

  • Middle Tennessee State University economics professor William Ford, who has studied taxes and immigration, says a majority of economists agree that illegal immigrants are a net benefit for the U.S. economy.
  • The IRS also has been issuing Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers, or ITINs, for 12 years to foreigners without a Social Security number. It’s believed that many workers who seek the ITINs are in the country illegally, and the IRS reported that there were 2.5 million tax returns filed with an ITIN in 2004.
  • If net immigration is high at 1.3 million people a year, the SSA’s combined trust fund would be exhausted in 2043. But the fund runs out four years earlier if annual net immigration amounts to about half that — 472,500 legal immigrants and 250,000 illegal immigrants.

I especially would like to draw attention to the second bullet point. ‘Illegals’ with ITIN’s are filing tax returns because historically this has been a requirement for adjustment of status applications. In the past, in order to be considered for legalization, it was requested to provide proof that 5 years of income tax returns had been filed. Filing their tax returns would increase their chances of being granted permission to stay. In this respect, it is to their long-term advantage to file returns.
